This Mapleson A circuit, also known as the Magill attachment, is a breathing system for adult anesthesia. A 2.0 L reservoir bag is mounted at the machine end with an APL valve, and a 1.6 m corrugated tube carries gas to the patient. The arrangement makes the circuit efficient for spontaneous ventilation, because fresh gas is not wasted during expiration.
Mapleson A is the most efficient of the Mapleson circuits for spontaneous ventilation. Because the reservoir bag and the APL valve sit at the machine end and the corrugated tube runs to the patient, the fresh gas that enters during expiration is stored and used for the next breath rather than being lost. In practice this means a lower fresh gas flow is needed than with Mapleson D or F during spontaneous breathing.
The same arrangement makes Mapleson A less suitable for controlled ventilation, where a much higher fresh gas flow is required to prevent rebreathing. Where controlled ventilation is needed, a Bain circuit (Mapleson D) is normally used instead.
Key Features:
Mapleson A (Magill attachment) configuration
2.0 L reservoir bag
1.6 m corrugated tubing with 22 mm internal diameter
APL valve for pressure relief
30M and 22F connectors
Efficient for spontaneous ventilation
Applications:
Spontaneous ventilation in adult anesthesia
Where a Magill attachment system is specified
Low fresh gas flow spontaneous breathing
Adult patients
Important Notes:
Mapleson A is efficient for spontaneous ventilation but requires a high fresh gas flow during controlled ventilation.
Check the APL valve setting before use.
Check that the reservoir bag is correctly seated and is not twisted.
Confirm the connector size matches the airway device and the anesthesia machine.
Do not use if the package is damaged or opened.
Single use only unless the circuit is specified as reusable.
This product is a breathing system. It requires an anesthesia machine and trained personnel.
