This Mapleson F circuit is a T-piece breathing system in which the T-piece sits close to the patient. The volume between the patient and the bag is small, so the circuit responds quickly to changes in fresh gas flow and to manual ventilation — which is why T-piece systems are used for infants and small paediatric patients. Six versions are available, with open or closed tail bags from 0.5 L to 2.0 L, with or without an APL valve.
The T-piece is the defining feature of this circuit. Because the T-piece sits close to the patient and the tubing between the patient and the bag holds very little gas, the circuit responds quickly when the bag is squeezed and when the fresh gas flow is changed. Small tidal volumes are delivered without the dead space and compliance of a larger circuit, which is why the T-piece is the standard choice for infant anesthesia.
Two arrangements are available. An open tail bag vents excess gas from the tail and gives a direct visual indication of how the patient is being ventilated; this suits spontaneous ventilation. A closed tail bag is used with an APL valve, which lets the relief pressure be set when the patient is manually ventilated.
Key Features:
T-piece configuration with the volume close to the patient
Fast response to manual ventilation and changes in fresh gas flow
Open tail bags for spontaneous ventilation
Closed tail bags with APL valve for pressure-limited manual ventilation
Bag sizes from 0.5 L for infants to 2.0 L for adults
Luer lock sampling port on selected versions
15M patient connector with a 22F adapter supplied
Applications:
Infant and small paediatric anesthesia
Spontaneous ventilation with an open tail bag
Manual ventilation with a closed tail bag and APL valve
Where a low-volume circuit close to the patient is preferred
Transport and short procedures
Important Notes:
Select the bag size and APL valve setting to suit the patient. The 0.5 L bag with a 40 cmH2O valve is for infants; the 2.0 L bag with a 60 cmH2O valve is for adults.
Do not occlude the open end of an open tail bag; the open tail is part of the pressure-limiting design.
A closed tail bag must be used with an APL valve; do not substitute an open tail bag.
Check the APL valve setting before use.
Confirm the patient connection: the system is supplied with a 15M connector and a 22F adapter.
Do not use if the package is damaged or opened.
Single use only unless the circuit is specified as reusable.
