This smoothbore anesthesia circuit kit uses tubing with a smooth inner wall, which offers lower resistance to gas flow than a corrugated tube of the same diameter. The tubing is also lighter, which reduces drag on the airway, and the smooth transparent wall makes condensate easier to see. Each kit is assembled from a fixed combination of circuit length, single tube, breathing bag and connectors.
The smooth inner wall is the defining feature of this circuit type. With no ribs to disturb the gas flow, resistance is lower and the tube is lighter than a corrugated circuit of the same diameter. Smooth walls also allow condensate to be seen more easily through the tubing, and the reduced weight means less pull on the airway. Smoothbore circuits are often chosen for low-flow anesthesia and for pediatric patients, where lower resistance is an advantage.
