Smoothbore Ventilator Circuit

This smoothbore ventilator circuit connects a patient to a ventilator in intensive care. The tubing has a smooth inner wall rather than a ribbed one, which gives a lower resistance to gas flow and a lighter tube than a corrugated circuit of the same diameter. It is supplied in six configurations, from a plain circuit with one water trap up to a fully equipped set, in adult and paediatric sizes.

The smooth inner wall is the defining feature of this circuit. With no ribs to disturb the gas flow, resistance is lower than in a corrugated tube of the same diameter, and the tube itself is lighter — both of which reduce the work of breathing and the pull on the airway. The wall is also transparent, so condensate can be seen as it forms rather than being hidden by ribs.

The trade-off is kink resistance. A smooth tube bends less forgivingly than a corrugated one, so routing matters: the circuit should be supported and kept clear of the bed frame and any equipment that could compress it.

Important Notes:

• Single use only unless the circuit is specified as reusable.

• Do not use if the package is damaged or opened.

• Smoothbore tubing kinks more readily than corrugated tubing. Support the circuit and keep it clear of the bed frame and equipment.

• Do not allow the tubing to become compressed or trapped.

• Position the water trap at the lowest point of the circuit so that condensate collects there.

• Do not allow condensate to drain towards the patient; empty the trap before it reaches the fill line.

• Check that all connections are secure before use.

• This product is a breathing circuit. It does not provide ventilatory support on its own.
